Een Brits-Nederlandse medewerker van platenlabel EMI, waar David Bowie tot tenminste januari 2012 onder contract stond, laat Stashpress weten dat de Britse artiest eind 2011 is benaderd voor een optreden tijdens de opening van de Olympische Spelen in Londen. Het gerucht ging al eerder maar bereikt met de bevestiging van een insider binnen EMI nu een ‘hoogtepunt’.
“Ik weet dat hij inderdaad benaderd is om een optreden te vertolken tijdens de opening van de Spelen in Londen. Hij heeft toen van een ‘gig’ afgezien omdat Bowie andere dingen te doen had.” Wat die andere bezigheden precies zijn wil de EMI-medewerker, die anoniem wenst te blijven, niet kwijt.
“Uiteindelijk is er gekozen voor passende Bowie-muziek tijdens de opening van de Spelen”, aldus de bron binnen EMI.

Bekend zijn de verhalen dat zowel Bowie als zijn (ex-)platenmaatschappij al geruime tijd op gespannen voet leven. Ook kreeg ‘The Thin White Duke’ in 2004 een hartaanval waarna zijn ‘Reality Tour’ voortijdig werd stopgezet. Sindsdien heeft Bowie geen nieuw werk meer uitgebracht en was hij uiterst zelden nog actief op het podium.
